The Maryland Constitutional Election of 1864: A Border Slave State's Soldiers Stand for Freedom
Join Stephen A. Goldman, M.D., as he explores the vital role of Maryland’s white Union servicemen in adopting the new state constitution that abolished slavery in 1864.
The border state of Maryland epitomized the contradictions of slavery, African American freedom, and the Civil War’s harsh "brother against brother" reality. By 1864, the Free State had reached a crossroads that the entire nation was confronting—a Civil War that had turned savage, whether Abraham Lincoln would be reelected, and what would be the fate of four million human beings held in bondage.
Join psychiatrist and author Dr. Stephen A. Goldman as he explores how the soldiers' and sailors' vote in Maryland would greatly determine the state's future and why their overwhelming support for slavery's abolition exemplified how the war radicalized so many white servicemen throughout the Union.

Victorian Chautauqua Festival - Deaconess Tent
Oakland, MD
Psychiatrist Stephen A. Goldman offers a pioneering look into how Union veterans’ obligation to their country did not end when they returned home, but had only begun. Instrumental to saving the Union and destroying slavery, they were bound together by a shared ideological commitment to what the Civil War had set in motion. Irrevocably changed by all they had seen, done, endured, and accomplished, Northern servicemen knew that the nation’s “unfinished work” promised to be as bitter, divisive, and perilous as its armed struggle had been.

Goldman will discuss One More War to Fight: Union Veterans’ Battle for Equality through Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the Lost Cause. Analyzing talks delivered at Northern soldiers’ Gettysburg reunions in the 1880s and other new material, Dr. Goldman presents compelling evidence to challenge a popular historical standpoint that white Union veterans had a major role in acceptance of a Lost Cause interpretation to the Civil War and reconciliation, and the valorous service of African American servicemen increasingly being forgotten.

Fit for Duty: The Veteran Reserve Corps in the Civil War and Reconstruction

Described by the Indiana Adjutant General “as unusual a fighting force as the United States ever armed and equipped for action,” the dreadfully-named, preposterously uniformed Invalid Corps came into existence in April 1863, and within a year became the Veteran Reserve Corps (VRC). Despite general derision from able-bodied filed unit comrades, they provided valuable garrison, guard, and other types of off-line duty, and enabled superb soldiers to continue serving their country during the Civil War, and after.

Newcomer House Porch Program
Keedysville, MD
Psychiatrist and author Dr. Stephen Goldman will present a talk focusing on his newest book, "One More War to Fight: Union Veterans' Battle for Equality Through Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the Lost Cause." The talk will take place Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. at the Newcomer House on the Antietam National Battlefield.
In this book, Goldman has linked his experience treating and working with combat veterans with in-depth study of the Civil War, Reconstruction, and race. There will be particular emphasis placed on the chapter dealing with the raging controversy surrounding the establishment of what is now the National Cemetery at the Antietam National Battlefield. Using new primary sources, Goldman looks at the contentious post-Civil War era from the perspective of Union soldiers who lived by the bayonet and survived to carry on the fight for equality in the decades to come. He explores the root causes of this historic contest, the changing attitudes of northern servicemen with respect to the Civil War’s purpose, and the psychological effect of involvement in what, from hindsight, was an unfinished work in the cause of freedom and equality for all Americans.
