WM. AUGUSTUS MACNULTY: A MAIMED SCARBOROUGH VETERAN SERVES SUPERBLY IN WAR AND THE FREEDMEN’S BUREAU
Stephen A. Goldman, M.D., LFACLP, DLFAPA
In his presentation, psychiatrist and historian Dr. Stephen A. Goldman will discuss how Union veterans, irrevocably changed by all they'd seen, done, endured, and accomplished, shouldered “the unfinished work” they knew would be as bitter, divisive, and perilous as the Civil War itself.
In doing so, he will tell the inspiring story of Wm. Augustus MacNulty, a one-armed soldier from Scarborough who epitomized that commitment. Dr. Goldman will detail how he became an officer in the Veteran Reserve Corps, then joined the Freedmen’s Bureau remarkable efforts to educate those previously enslaved and protect their rights, marking the beginning of Northern veterans’ decades-long postwar dedication to equality for all Americans.
